Jena war eine Kleinstadt mit etwa 4500 Einwohnern. Innerhalb weniger Tage zogen hier mindestens 50 000 Soldaten zweier Heere durch. Der damals 37jhrige Theologe J. T. L. Danz hat es erlebt und aufgeschrieben. Sein Augenzeugenbericht erschien 1809 und wird hier erstmals wieder vorgelegt.
